We drove to Mossman Gorge this morning. It's part of the Daintree National Park, a World Heritage Park. The rainforest here is the oldest in the world. It was here when Australia separated from Gonwanda, when all the continents were together.
The visitors center was a new building and they had shuttle buses to take us to the gorge. We took a short walk along the Mossman River and then the trail went inland through the depths of the rainforest. It was hot and humid and fascinating, lots of ferns and vines tall trees. As we were walking up a hill, a man going in the other direction stopped and said, "I know you!". It was Joseph, Anna's son and Zoe. They were in the area celebrating Joseph's birthday. What an amazing coincidence. They were on their way for a swim in the river.
After our walk we stopped at the visitors center and noticed they had a barramundi lunch special. So we had lunch on the veranda. It was wonderful. The fish was grilled and delicious and the salad was a welcome change from chip or fries.
Then we decided to go north to the Discovery Center. We took a ferry over the Daintree River and on a narrow winding mountain road. to get there. It was a commercial venture but was well done. They had an audio tour that told about the plants and animals and the Aboriginal uses of the plants. There was a raised boardwalk through the rainforest, a tower above the rainforest, a trail at ground level and a bush tucker trail. It explained a lot of the things we had seen in Mossman Gorge. We saw a brilliant blue Ulysses butterfly, a golden orb spider and a lizard.
We drove south along the coast, with views of the Coral Sea. Then we found a rest area on the beach and stopped for the night. The surf is pounding in the background as I write.
